Fallout 76 Invites You to Do Some Fishing in a Post-Apocalyptic World

A new update is now live in Fallout 76 and there's a lot of new content to enjoy. The highlight is getting the ability to go fishing and perform it in any region in Appalachia.

Let's start with the new questline which is "Casting Off." Players need to head to a new location in the Mire which is the Fisherman's Rest. They should meet new characters who are the disoriented Captain Raymond Clark, a mysterious new figure who goes by the name The Fisherman, and Fisherman’s adorable pet hermit crab named Linda-Lee.

During this questline players receive a working Fishing Rod which should allow them to walk up to any body of water and start fishing. The thing to remember is that "If you can swim in it, you can fish in it." The thing players need to remember is that the Fishing Rod won’t appear in their Pip-Boy menu since it's not an item that they need to equip. Instead what happens is that if they're standing next to a body of water for example, the "Fish" command should appear on the screen. However, the Fishing Rod does show up in the Tinkers Workbench menu to allow players to modify it.

Use the Bait

Like fishing in the real world, players in Fallout 76 need to use bait especially if they want to catch any fish. There are three types of bait players can gather and these are:

Common Bait

  • Gives players the chance to catch generic fish, scrapable junk, and common regional fish.
  • Common Bait can be purchased from The Fisherman and Captain Raymond Clark in Fisherman’s Rest.
  • Players also have a chance to receive this bait after completing the daily fishing quest.

Improved Bait

  • This bait gives players an increased chance of catching uncommon fish.
  • It can't be purchased from any vendor.
  • Players can trade Improved Bait with other players.
  • Players can also get more from the daily fishing quest, public events, and finding it in lootable containers around the world.

Superb Bait

  • Earnable as rewards in Season 21.
  • This bait gives players the best chance to catch very rare fish.

Weather Effects

Even if players have bait, there's one factor that can affect the catch and that's the weather. Weather has an influence on the odds of catching specific types of fish. Here's some details:

  • Clear Weather: Best suited for catching common fish that can be found in any region.
  • Rainy Weather: Has an increased chance of catching region-specific fish, as well as the elusive Axolotls.
  • Radstorm/Nuke Weather: Radstorms and weather caused by nukes increase the chance of catching Glowing Fish.
